AS AN AVID reader of CM for many years, I am impressed with the new format. Just back from a job in France and catching up on news in last week's issue,! was interested in the very low insurance premiums quoted in the feature on the new Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 DTI high-roof van for a 40-yearold builder (CM 13 Nov).
CM is "at the heart of the road transport industry", so what have builders got to do with it? By definition road transport is mainly hire and reward, both UK and international.
Having a similar van myself I thought I'd take advantage of a quote from your CVD source and on calling the number given-0870 7518131 — I was amazed to be told: "Sorry, we don't quote for haulage." However, they did give another number, 0870 7518139, and these CVD people were most helpful. After taking all my details eg (59, full licence for 40 years, 25 years' European experience, full NCB on a Ford Transit 2602.01 Diesel/ 74hp, carrying only non-hazardous goods) they did, as promised, call back in minutes with a quote for comprehensive insurance of £1.066 —but for UK only, of course.
All insurance now has to give minimum third party cover in the EU but this is no comfort if your new van gets stolen, damaged or on fire.
I must ask why you are stating examples of insurance premiums in a magazine related to road transport in such a misleading way? Surely any vehicle featured in CM must be considered to have a possibility of being used for haulage.
The insurance situation for vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes in the sub-0-licence class.has been made difficult not least by the actions of "white van man". Perhaps you could provide sonic more realistic insurance quotes in another feature soon.
