It is estimated that foreign vehicles lifted a total of 33 million tonnes in the UK last year. accounting for no less than 10 billion tonnekilometres. Of those goods 62% were being brought into the UK. 25% were exports, with 6% accounted for by cabotage.
The remaining tonne-kilometres were goods-in transit loads carried through the UK but which were loaded and unloaded outside it, such as the traffic from Ireland to France. Foreign trucks travelled an estimated 0.9bn km in the UK last year. This compared with 22bn km travelled by UK-registered vehicles on UK roads in 2002.
