WITH LESS THAN nine weeks to go until it opens. many large hauliers already seem to be shunning the M6 toll motorway which runs round Birmingham.

Midland Expressway. operator of the 22-mile road, confirms that fewer than 10 fleets are signed up for the electronic tag system which avoids the need to stop and pay at toll booths. This is despite marketing the benefits of the road among the 100 top fleets that regularly use the existing M6 and A5.

However, a spokesman for the company describes the number of registrations for tag accounts as "encouraging". adding: "We expect many to follow their lead once the benefits become clear. Interest is very high in signing up for our tag accounts from those fleets who have clearly recognised the benefits of using the toll road.

"We're confident that over-time drivers will choose to avoid the notoriously congested M6 and move onto a free-flowing M6 toll." Among those committed to using 1.1 system are Cheshire-based James Mani & Irlam fleet engineer Brian Lincoln says use M6 toll will mainly be confined to peak ix "You can get stuck for hours on the M6 am this will bypass all the trouble spots.Al nigh we will probably use normal routes."

However, Leonard Bassett from Slob Trent-based RG Bassett & Sons says:"If I one starts using the new road then people find themselves with a lot of extra cost very little return. At £10 a time we are gc have to consider very, very carefully what we'll get from it before signing up."

A survey published by the Freight port Association in July found that onl: of operators expect to use the toll road the M6 is congested, and 16% do not to use it at all.

When the £10 charge for trucks using t toll was announced the PTA said it was r the hoped-for level (CMS May).
