THEAMOUNT OF freight transported by road in the UK rose by almost 3% in 2002 according to the latest Regional Transport Statistics report from the Department for Transport.

In total 1,627 million tonnes were moved. up from 1.581 million tonnes in 2001. Of this 194 million tonnes originated from the NorthWest region of England, more than any other region. However. this figure was down seven million tonnes on the previous year.

In contrast tonnage in the South-West and Yorkshire and the Humber rose by 16 million tonnes from 2001 to stand at 148 million tonnes and 187 million tonnes respectively. Tonnage in the West Midlands rose by 18 million tonnes to 150 million tonnes.

Outward foreign and domestic sea freight passing through UK ports amounted to 230.870 million tonnes in 2002, down from 231265 million tonnes in 2001.

Inward sea freight fell from 313.934 million tonnes in 2001 to 306,092 million tonnes.

The survey also revealed that the number of road traffic casualties on UK roads fell from 313,309 in 2001 to 302,605 in 2002.
