An Effective Decarbonizing Outfit.

The necessity of keeping the engine free from carbon deposit is recognized by every riser; in fact, it is impossible to maintain an engine at its highest state, of eflicieney unless it is kept clean.

Brown Bros., Ltd., Great Eastern Street, E.C., has recently introduced quite a simple form of outfit by which combustion chambers can be satisfactorily and quickly cleaned by merely removing the valve caps from the cylinders. The tool consists of hardened and suitably-tempered flexible steel scrapers, one for the piston and another for the head of the cylinder, a short scraper for cleaning out the port .orifiee, and a stiff brush for final cleaning.

The scraping edge of the tools is serrated; the teeth are tapered both ways towards the cutting face, Lirici they are suitably hardened to resist wear. To rise the tool it is only necessary to remove the valve port caps in the cylinders and turn the engine flywheel until the piston in each cylinder to be cleaned is at its top position. By inserting a scraper and moving it sideways, as well as to and fro, the face of the tool is enabled to reach every portion a the top of the piston.

For the underside of the combustion head another scraper is supplied with the outfit; this is worked in precisely the same manner, except that the point of the tool is turned in the opposite direction, and pressure on the combustion head is thus Obtained through the, heel of the tool coming into contact with the top of the piston, or the lower part of the port orifice.

Then there is the important point of removing every particle of the scraped carbon from the combustion space, and various mechanical means for effecting this have been marketed but have met with morn or less success. The method by which Brown Bros., Ltd., satisfactorily accomplishes this is to insert the nozzle of a foot pump in the port orifice with the jet facing one side of the cylinder, and then give one or two vigorous strokes ; the swirl of air produced brings the carbon out of the cylinder and deposits it just over the valves, where it can be cleaned out readily with a scraper for the purpose. The few particles that may remain can be removed with the brush supplied with the outfit. This method of blowitlg the carbon out of the cylinder is an essential part. ,of the invention, but ithas not been thought necessary to provide any special tool for the purpose as it would only add to the expense of the outfit, and it has been found that an ordinary .foot pump does the work quite satisfactorily.

Citroen Gears for Live-axle Drives.

The efficiency and silence in running which double helical gears afford, providing they are correctly machined, has long been recognized by the gener al engineer. Their adoption, however, to the automobile indkuistry is practically of modern date.

We hav.e. recently Tbeen notified by an old-estab lished on-anal-1y, which has long specialized in this type of gearing, the Citroen Gear Co., Ltd., 27, Victoria Street, E.G., that it possesses special plant with which its silent-running, double-helical form of gear can be manufactured with a high degree of accuracy, which is so essential a quality for gear sets used isn automobile construction.

Our illustration shows a Citroen double-helical bevel gear installed for a live-axle drive, and the maker guarantees no less than tH per cent. efficiency, due to continuous engagement of the teeth, little friction, and their true helical shape. All Citroen productions are maoliined to high limits, and the teeth_ are automatically cut with one tool in a single

operation and from the solid. This type of gear allows reduction up to 20 to 1, and it is possible to reduce the number of teeth in the pinion to as low as four. They can be cut to any pitch of practical maximum, but the minimum limit is 5-16 in. pitch for gunmetal and cast-iron teeth, and 0, in, pitch for steel. The company has carried out extensive efficiency tests under the Hopkinson rules, and all gears are tested for correct and silent running before leaving the works.
