A COUNCIL failed to turn up at an application hearing to support its own objection to a licence on safety grounds. Staff at its offices were unaware of the objection it had lodged.

Newport Borough Council had been due to appear at a Cardiff public inquiry to substantiate its objection to a licence bid by Craig and Dean Simons, trading as Simons Bros Transport. When it did not appear Welsh Traffic Commissioner David Dixon said the council had been contacted but no one appeared to have any knowledge of the objection.

The TC ruled that Simons Bros could continue operating under interim authority granted in January. The hearing of the application was adjourned until a new date could be set.

The council had objected to the firm's bid for a licence authorising two vehicles and two trailers based at Druidstone Road, St Mellons on road safety grounds, stating that there were problems with the access to the operating centre.

Transport manager Donald Simons said two men had visited the premises and taken photographs of the property. He claimed they had said they would be at the public inquiry and appeared to be aware of the hearing date.

Simons maintained that the premises had previously been used as an operating centre, but the TC pointed out that this fact had not been established.
