• Motorway tolls could be delayed well into the next century as industry pundits predict that the Government is likely to shelve tolling legislation until after the next General Election.
It had been thought that the cabinet would slot a bill on motorway tolls into the next parliamentary session opening in October. But now ministers
are nervous that although charges would not have been levied until after the election, the plan could be as unpopular as rail privatisation and deter potential Tory voters.
The postponement would probably mean tolls could not be introduced in 1998—the earliest date the Government planned to levy the charges.
