/ Three bus operators have already ordered a new air suspension system for mini and midibus drive axles which is claimed to improve ride quality by 37%.

The system, designed by Gillingham-based Rapidform for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes GVW, is in use with Always, Baileys and London Transport Centre West.

It is said to be different from the trailing-arm systems used on HGVs in that the air spring is in front of the drive axle to give maximum axle travel.

The support arm uses a spring beam concept with a cross spring to connect the air bags laterally, which improves roll stiffness and stability.

A release valve is incorporated which can be used to lower the rear end of the vehicle by up to 13cm, giving potential for ambulances and welfare vehicles.

In normal use the system retains a constant ride height. It is said to increase vehicle body life by reducing the vibration and road shocks transmitted by conventional steel-sprung suspensions.
