Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE ARCHWAY ROAD improvement plans for the Al in North London are for a "dual carriageway which nobody wants," according to the Greater London Council.

GLC transport committee vicechair Paul Moore called last week for the Government to abandon its plans to widen the road — the fourth attempt to undertake this controversial scheme — and described the plans for a public inquiry as an "appalling waste of public expenditure".

He said: "There is no support for this motorway. When the Government published its revocation orders sweeping away previous plans for the road so that they could bring in the latest batch, only one objector raised its voice against the loss of the old road-widening plans. Compare that against the thousands who have apposed them."

According to the GLC, the plan would create eight or nine lanes of traffic for most of its route and lead to the demolition of around 120 properties. All local authorities in the area oppose the scheme.

Movement for London, the London regional group for the British Road Federation (the lobby group for the road construction industry) is campaigning for the road improvement, and says it will still be needed when the M25 orbital route is complete (CM, August 27).
