Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A six-speed gearbox and a 10-speed split-torque (twin-layshaft) transmission that are produced by the Spicer Transmissions Division of the Dana Corporation 'of America and have torque ratings of up to 1200 lb ft are now marketed in this country by the Turner Manufacturing Co Ltd, Fordhouses. Wolverhampton. and will be manufactured in the UK. A new Turner five-speed synchromesh gearbox has been announced which is derived from a fourspeed box introduced in February of this year.

The 10-speed transmission is the Spicer SST-10 Model 1010-2A which is a splitter type and has an input torque rating of 1000 lb ft; it weighs under 6101b and has a length of 28-kin. It is designed for vehicles with gcw ratings ranging upwards from 26 tons. Intermediate gear changes are made by a pneumatic system operated by a flick switch on the gear lever. The splitter gear is engaged by a Curvic clutch that is said to provide for virtually instantaneous changes and to be highly durable in service. Uniform ratio steps of between 26 per cent and 29 per cent enable an optimum wheel torque to be maintained and aid performance prediction.

Of special note the bottom gear of the SST-10 has a ratio of 8_86 to 1 while the higher ratios are 6.97 to 1 (second) 5.40 to 1, 4.25 to 1, 3.35 to 1, 2.63 to 1,2.03 to 1, 1.59 to 1, 1.27 to 1 and 1 to I (top). Two reverse gears have ratios of 8.86 to 1 and 6.97 to 1.

The second Spicer gearbox marketed by Turner, the SST-6 series, is a six-speed transmission that is designed for vehicles of up to 56 tons gcw and has torque ratings of 1000/1200 lb ft according to the model. The model 1062-A has a torque rating of 1000 lb It and the bottom gear ratio is 8.5 to I, the ratios being evenly stepped between bottom gear and the direct-drive top gear. Having the same torque capacity and bottom gear ratio as the 1062-A, the 1062-B has "gathered" ratios, those at the

top end being closer than the ratios at the bottom end.

The remaining two models are rated at 1200 lb ft and have a bottom gear ratio of 7.47 to 1, the 1262-A having a direct top gear and the 1263-A an overdrive gear with a ratio of 0.84 to 1. The 1263-A is available with a Spicer auxiliary transmission for off-highway applications.

Known as the T5-200 series, the new Turner five-speed synchromesh gearbox is, like the T4-200 four-speed unit, designed for vehicles up to 9 tons gross weight and has a nominal torque rating of 200 lb ft. The synchronizing mechanism incorporates a Turner torque-lock that ensures that the hub and gear are positively locked when in gear, and taper roller bearings are used. It weighs 155Ib with a cast-iron casing and 1151b if a die-cast aluminium casing is used. It is produced in 11 models, five of which are of the overdrive type. Bottom gear ratios vary between 4.526 to 1 and 7.138 to 1. The Turner T4-200 gearbox (from which the T5-200 was derived) has ratios of 6.54 to 1 (bottom), 3.11 to I, 1.67 to 1 and 1 to 1 (top) while reverse has a ratio of 6.067 to I. Its dry weight is 110th and it has a length of 16in.

'Heavy-duty auto-coupling

• The French manufacturer, F.A.R., of the automatic coupling for articulated vehicles first developed by Scammell has adapted the system for use with heavy-duty artics.

The redesigning has for example, involved replacing the spring-loaded support gear by an hydraulic system, while most of the structure has been strengthened.

The basic principle remains unchanged, in that when the tractive unit is driven under the semi-trailer the front end is lifted and the support gear is raised as the unit couples.
