Mr. S. J. Hooper has been appointed principal staff assistant, with the rank of principal executive assistant, in the department of the chief mechanical engineer (road services) of London Transport. He will be responsible to the chief mechanical engineer (road services) for the works and rolling stock staff sections.

Mr. Hooper, who is 50, joined London General Country Services Ltd. in 1932. In June. 1951 he entered the personal office of a member of the London Transport Executive, and in 1955 was promoted to personal assistant to the chief mechanical engineer (road services).

Mr. H. D. Fawell, a superintendent engineer in the mechanical engineering branch of the Ministry of Transport, has been promoted to fill a newly created post of deputy to the chief mechanical engineer. Mr. Fawell, who is 56, had his early training with John I. Thornycroft and Co. Ltd., held appointments with them and with the East Kent Road Car Co. Ltd. before joining the Ministry as an assistant engineer in 1937. He became superintending engineer in 1962.

Mr. M. J. C. Crowhurst has been appointed by J. C. Bamford (Excavators) Ltd. as area sales supervisor for JCB earth-moving equipment in the south west of England. He was formerly with Sales (Contractors Plant) Ltd. of Bristol, JCB main dealers.

The Ministry of Transport has appointed Mr. G. C. Bache as a member of the Transport Users' Consultative Committee for the West Midland Area, Mr. Bache is managing director of G. Bache and Son Ltd., Halesowen.

As previously announced. Mr. R. H. Thompstone has left the Perkins Group, where he was Press officer of Perkins Engines Ltd. He has now taken up art appointment as public relations officer 'vith David Brown Corporation Ltd. Mr, Robert Mulholland has been appointed to the new post of production manager at Atkinson Vehicles Ltd., Preston. For the past three years Mr. Mulholland h a s been chief production engineer at Ransome and Rapier Ltd., Ipswich, where part of his responsibility w as the production of mobile cement mixers.

At a meeting of the highways and vehicles committee of the Road Haulage Association last week, Mr. C. W. Oliver was re-elected as chairman and Mr. A. C. W. Neely and Mr. J. Castle were reelected as vice-chairmen.

Mr. J. Newton, transport manager of Dunlop's general rubber goods division in Manchester, has been appointed public relations officer and elected to the council of the newly formed National Traders and Traffic Association. Mr. Newton, who is 44, previously held similar positions in the Traders Traffic Conference before it was amalgamated with the Mansion House Association of Transport to form the NITA. In addition to his other activities, he is chairman of the transport committee of the Federation of British Rubber and Allied Manufacturers.

Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., USA, has announced the appointment of Mr. W. Atkinson Adam as chairman and managing director of Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co. Ltd.—its wholly-owned subsidiary in Britain

Mr. W. J. Semmons is to retire from the Civil Service on September 15 and will be relinquishing his position as a deputy director of The Fighting Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, Ministry of Defence (AD). He will then have completed 25 years of service, 14 of which were as assistant director in charge of the power plant branch which he founded when his services were lent by AEC Ltd. to the newly formed department of tank design in 1940. For the last 11 years Mr. Semmons has been a deputy director of the Establishment and head of its wheeled-vehicle division.

Mr. Patrick C. Ross, formerly marketing co-ordinator for International B. F. Goodrich Co. in Europe. has been appointed marketing manager, Europe.

Mr. W. E. Macve, managing director of British Road Ferry Services Ltd., has retired. As from September 1 he was succeeded by Mr. W. N. Cherry, formerly general manager. Mr. J. G. Woollam will become chairman of British

Road Ferry Services Ltd., and also of Anglo Continental Container Services (London) and (Belfast) Ltd. Mr. Macve will continue as a non-executive director of British Road Services Ltd., but will relinquish all other directorships. Mr. Macve joined Bleachers' Association Ltd. in 1924 as assistant to the managing

director responsible ' for transport, becoming assistant transport manager of the company in 1929 and transport manager in 1932. He served as chairman of the North Western division of the Commercial Motor Users' Association and vice-chairman of the national body in 1936. After joining the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board as assistant general manager in 1937, Mr. Macve subsequently became operations manager. In 1945 he was appointed chairman of Traffic Commissioners and Licensing Authority for the North Western area. Mr. Macve joined BRS as divisional manager, North 'Western, in 1948 and in January, 1964, became managing director, British Road Ferry Services Ltd. He was also chairman of Ferry Trailers Ltd. and Irish Ferryways Ltd. and a director of BRS Ltd. and Anglo Continental Container Services Ltd.

Mr. G. D. Bickmore, formerly commercial manager of Anglo-Continental Services (London) and (Belfast) Ltd., has been appointed general manager of both companies.

Mr. John C. Marshall is to succeed Mr. R. S. F. Edwards as docks and commercial manager of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. Mr. Edwards is now deputy general manager, and Mr. Marshall has been assistant docks and commercial manager since March. He is 46.
