Through services to Canada

CANADIAN PACIFIC, the largest trucking organization in Canada, and the third largest in North America in addition to operating the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP Rail) now has the first phase of CP Ships' interim container service safely under way. The group is the only container operator on the UK, Europe and Canada route able to offer a fully integrated door-to-door service. Canadian Pacific companies involved are CP Ships, CP Rail, CP Express and CP Transport, for which one unified container marketing group exists.

To make the 'service yet more efficient, CP Ships have three large cellular container vessels on order, the first coming into service in August 1970.

Meanwhile, regular saiiings with converted conventional vessels are maintained by CP Ships between Tilbury, Rotterdam and Quebec, and a new UK North West/Canada container service will come into operation early in the New Year.

Groupage facilities are operated by CP at main industrial centres throughout the UK, and many more are planned within the next few months. Depots have been established in Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Scandinavia, Switzerland and Italy. All these, together with CF's container groupage depots throughout Canada, will make the service one of the most extensive yet.

As well as offering secure, door-to-door container services to Canada, the CP group can supply exporters with valuable marketing information within each Canadian province.

Container ship group A GROUP of eight American container ship owners have filed a petition with the Federal Maritime Commission to establish a new type of conference solely for container ships. If approved, the petition would mean a break away from the two traditional steamship associations that have dominated shipping for 100 years and the start of competition between container ships and -break bulk" ships. The proposed new conference would offer a two-way service with offices in New York and Antwerp. It would thus compete with both the North Atlantic Westbound Freight Association and the North American Continental Freight Company. At the present time container ship lines belong to either of these two.

A spokesman for the petitioning lines stated that the new conference -will encourage the establishment of more uniform conditions applicable to cargoes moving in the conference trade regardless of the port or range served-.

BROOK MOTORS Ltd. is now despatching products abroad in containers. The first experiment was a container loaded with 18 tons of medium-sized electric motors, which was directed to its subsidiary company in Rexdale, Canada. This reached its destination within 17 days.

Following the success of the experiment it is now planning to make direct deliveries to subsidiary company warehouses at Rexdale, Canada and Chicago, USA, at the rate of four to six containers per week, thereby giving a more efficient and speedier shipment of larger tonnages to these two important markets.
