Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THREE OF THE UK's biggest beer distribution companies have begun talks with union officials about reducing accident rates among draymen.

Beer delivery is regarded as one of the most hazardous types of distribution because loading and unloading are manually intensive and often involve moving product in confined spaces and up and down steep slopes.Fractures are common injuries, says the Transport & General Workers Union (T&G).

Brian Revell, national food and agriculture organiser for the T&G, says the three companies involved in the talks — Carlsberg, Tradeteam and Scottish & Newcastle — represent about 80% of the UK market.

"I think there is an understanding in the industry that probably more can be done to improve the standard of safety,"he adds."At the end of the day, we want to set minimum standards for the industry Maybe we will get some practices that won't produce the most economic form of delivery?"

Donna Cresswel I of Carlsberg UK, which employs 800 draymen, welcomes the talks, which also involve the Health & Safety Executive.

"We want to make sure that all our people understand all of the procedures that are in place and, if there are any new ones we don't know about, we want to be up there with the hest," she says.
