TN a 20-page report the Northern Regional Council of the Labour Party has put forward a plan for a single giant transport authority in the North, covering all public transport—municipal, company and independent—and rail commuter services. And it rejects Mrs. Castle's present plans for a Passenger Transport Authority limited to the conurbation of Tyneside, claiming instead that the North East should be dealt with as a whole.

A statement issued last week by the council gives no indication of how undertakings or companies would be taken over, but stresses that the authority should "aim at commercial viability but should be entitled to Government help to maintain certain services as envisaged in the White Paper of 1966".

The Northern Regional Council has 50,000 members, and the report, which was requested by the Minister of Transport, has been endorsed by the transport unions and by 30 Labour MPs in the North. The Authority, with 12 members would operate between the Tweed and North Yorkshire. The chairman and vice-chairman would be nominated by the Minister. Two members would be elected every two years by the employees, three would he nominated by local authorities, and two more by political parties. A general manager and two senior officials would complete the board.

VOICE wants money COMMERCIAL vehicle manufacturers amo to be asked by VOICE for financial support for its campaign against the proposed PTAs. This was announced by Mr. D. R. Quin, PVOA secretary, replying to a question about obtaining more funds for the campaign which was put to his committee at a special meeting of the London and Home Counties section of the Association in London.

So far, said Mr. Quin, only some £7,000 had been collected for the fighting fund, but not less than £25,000 was needed. If this amount was not forthcoming soon, they would have to approach members for a second time.
