• Abbey Hill Vehicle Services has won a contract to transport all of Honda's car imports from the dockside to the Japanese company's new predelivery inspection centre at Swindon.
Honda is switching its car imports from Sheerness in Kent, to the Royal Portbury Docks near Bristol, because of its proximity to Swindon.
Under the terms of the contract, Bristol-based Abbey Hill will be responsible for the dockside handling, storage and transport of up to 20,000 Hondas a year.
Abbey Hill is expected to use seven transporters for the contract, each with a capacity of 14 or 15 cars, The journey time between the Royal Portbury Docks and the pre-delivery inspection facility at Swindon is estimated to be around 80 minutes, allowing each vehicle to carry up to three loads a day.
The contract begins in September, when Honda begins to take delivery of its 1987 models.
