TOWNSEND THORESEN has chartered the 1,599-ton rollon, roll-off ship Stena Trader to meet demand for its freight services from Southampton and Portsmouth to France.

The ship will be renamed Viking Trader and has been taken on a one year bare boat charter from the Swedish Stena Line. She has bow and stern loading, carries 45 twelve-metre trailers and 50 trade cars. with cabin accommodation and lounge facilities for 12 drivers. The ship is suited for all classes of hazardous cargoes and is equipped to carry refrigerated vehicles. Abnormal loads can also be accommodated.

Townsend Thoresen now offer four sailings a day in each direction between Southampton or Portsmouth and Le Havre. Viking Trader replaces Viking Victory which, after refit, will resume operating the company's PortsmouthCherbourg summer service on May 15, with a daily capacity of up to 32 trailers in each direction.
