Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Jack-knifing and trailer-swing may soon be things of the past, said Professor R. H. Macmillan, director, Motor Industry Research Association, when he accepted the Dewar Challenge Trophy on behalf of the Association, last week. The trophy was presented by Mr. Wilfrid Andrews, chairman of the RAC who said: "MIRA researches have led to the development of load-sensitive brake control systems which reduce the tendency towards jack-lcnifing. Every mad user has cause to be grateful to them."

The citation which accompanies the award reads "for carrying out research and initiating development of the load proportioning system of braking to prevent 'jack-knifing' of articulated vehicles. The work was originated and undertaken by a section of MIRA under the direction of Mr. Fredrick D. Hales."
