by Juliet Parish • Linkman Tankers hopes to diversify into food and drink this year, and is already believed to be bidding for 4:10m worth of milk haulage.

The Transport Development Group subsidiary currently hauls chemicals and petroleum. It is understood to be pitchingfor a milk distribution contract in the north of England, where four of its five depots are based.

Linkman is also seeking contracts with brewers, and food and drink manufacturers in a bid to increase its consumables business so it accounts for at least 20% of its turnover instead of less than 5% now.

Managing director Peter O'Keefe says that he still considers Linkman's traditional business as a "key area for potential growth, particularly in the speciality chemicals markets." Last December he poached Tony Gilroy from Calor Transport to become national accounts manager for chemicals.

Linkman, which operates 300 trucks, will concentrate on transporting bulk consumable liquids in their finished form, taking care not to encroach on its sister firms' territory: Its Highland-based sister company McPherson spe cialises in whisky transport and Northwich-based Nexus Logistics in dry bulk food and chemicals and unfinished liquid foodstuffs.
