Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

INCREASES in freight rates for vehicles going to the Scottish islands were described as "savage" last week at a meeting of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities.

Western Isles councillor Donald Macauley told the convention that it now cost between £200 and £250 to send a vehicle to the Isles — and this was now affecting the life of the islands.

"Can you imagine what the effect would be if Fife region was an island and the only connection with the outside world was the Forth road bridge? What would the effect on life and industry in Fife be if every lorry had to pay that sum to cross the bridge," said Mr Macauley.

Now the convention is to take the matter up with the Government. Road and transportation committee chairman Tom Fulton told members that there had been no changes in policy from the Government to indicate changed views, but he would be taking the issue up.
