Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

use with the local county council, while on the site of the new terminal Scottish Land is operating some with strengthened bodies on hard rock work.

An original inquiry was made by Lilley for 12 dump trucks, but this was enlarged to a firm order for 20 vehicles by Len Brown for the consortium as a whole on the condition that Alec Gibson of Magirus Scotland could meet the required delivery date of the first working day of the New Year.

Taking the holiday period into account left seven working days to collect them together, body them and make minor strengthening modifications to the bodies. Four were in stock in Scotland, seven more were collected from Winsford in Cheshire and the rest came from the factory in Germany.

Telehoist put on the bodies, tipping gear and added the extra cross-bearers that had been asked for so that all were ready within the time allotted and awaiting shipment from the dockside at Leith.

During my short visit to the island, I came to the conclusion that there must be a higher concentration of Magirus Deutz dump trucks than in any other part of Britain. Alec Gibson shares the same view and as a result will be

sending out a resident engineer to the terminal site to provide an on-the-spot back-up service.

The new batch of 20 machines, at a total cost in the region of half a million pounds, are equipped with light V8 air-cooled diesel engines, ZF six-speed gearboxes and 8.4cum (1Icuyd) dump truck bodies. Their on-site capacity will be about 17 to 18 tons but will be restricted to 24 tons gross when in use on the public roads.

When I asked Len Brown why he had chosen this make of vehicle he told me that it was not the only

ine that he had considered, but here were some already operating in the site, which meant that a new ervicing facility would not have o be started from scratch.

It had a good reputation, among he operators using them, for reability, but especially for their .eadiness to start on cold mornngs. Shetland is about 195km 120 miles) north of the Scottish -nainland and it can get very cold.

But perhaps the most important )oint on this occasion which swung :he deal was the ability to deliver n the time period allotted and Illow continuity of work for what s the i)iggest construction tiroiramme in Europe at this time.

The vehicles will be used hard For at least 12 months, sometimes working up to 85 hours a week in the summer.

The drivers work four weeks on and one week off with travel to their destination on the mainland paid by the company.

As far as this system allows, there is one driver to each vehicle. Relief drivers are employed to fill in the gaps that arise from holidays and sickness, etc, so that the vehicles are fully utilised.

For much of the time they will carry rock to and from the crushing machines for use on the site and surrounding road network.
