Between 1993 and 2003 the share of freight lifted and moved by arks over 33 tonnes rose from 35% to 49% and from 59% to 71% respectively; the share of goods lifted by rigids fell from 55% to 47% and the percentage of goods moved by rigids fell from 28% to 23%. In 2002-3 the total amount of freight moved increased 1% to 152bn tonne-kilometres, with a 3% rise in goods moved by artics and a 1% fall in goods moved by rigids.

Over the past 13 years freight moved by owner-drivers has remained constant at around 36bn tonnekilometres, while the amount of freight moved by hauliers soared from 55bn tonne-kilometres to 114bn tonnekilometres.
Since 1993 freight moved by hire-or-reward hauliers has increased by 23% while freight moved by ownaccount operators has increased 6%. Freight lifted
Since 1993 the amount of freight lifted by operators has increased by 16% and freight lifted by ownerdrivers has fallen 4%. Over the past year the amount of freight lifted by owner-drivers has fallen 3%, having increased by 15% in the previous year.
