Copies of complete specifications of the patents published on this page can be obtained from the Sales Branch, Patent Office, Holborn, W.C., at the cost of sixpence for each specification.

T. CLARKSON, No. 3311, dated 2nd March, 1915.—The steamtubes of this boiler consist of straight radial tubes closed at their outer ends radiating horizontally from the boiler. The

tubes at the lower end are shorter than those at the upper end and are surrounded by the superheater. The firebrick casing is thickened at the lower end of the boiler to provide for ,the extra wear, and the thickening also provides a convenient shoulder for shielding the superheater tubes. The coke is fed in from two side hoppers on to a circular grate by the usual push-rods. The boiler is suspended in the furnace only from the top and is easily dismantled by lifting it out. The tubes can be readily replaced if necessary, but as each is of small length compared with its diameter, there is little risk of any being burned out.

D. M. HARTSOUOH, No. 13,531, dated 3rd June, 1914 — This specification describes a three-wheeled tractor of light and simple construction that is suitable for use on roads or on fields. A single large driving wheel is used, and it is mounted at one side of the framework. A steering-wheel is mounted at the front directly in front of the driving-wheel, and a, third idle wheel is situated opposite the driving-wheel. This third wheel is adjustable vertically. The engine is of the two-cylinder horizontal opposed type and a special transmission gear is described in detail.

The plough is attached to the frame of the tractor at a point inside the driving-wheel so that the drawbar pull tends to hold the steering-wheel against the side of the furrow in which it is running and thereby give practically automatic steering. Multiple ploughs are used and they are fitted with a castor wheel at the back end running in the last furrow, this being the furrow in which the driving and steering wheels run on the return jourhey. J. E. DEMPSEY, No. 10,274, dated 25th April, 1914.—The object of this invention is to provide a method of controlling the headlights so that they can be turned with the steering wheel so as always to illuminate the path of the car or to provide for independent movement of them. The headlights are mounted on swivel brackets which are connected by suitable levers and links to a hand-wheel mounted beneath the steering wheel on a sleeve loose on the steering column. This wheel provides for the independent control. If it is desired to turn the headlights simultaneously with the steering, the hand-wheel is locked to the steering column by a spring bolt. In an alternative construction a pedal-controlled clutch is arranged to lock the hand-wheel and the steering column together.

G. R. TAYLOR AND R. WRITE, No. 24,569 of 1914, dated under International Convention 23rd December, 1913.—The accompanying drawing shows in section two constructions of pneumatic wheel. The hub has formed on it or attached to it a Y-shaped rim which lies within a channelled member on which a solid tire is mounted. The side wings of the channel are bent inwards to face the inner arms of the Y and three pneumatic cushions are arranged as shown so as to separate the inner and outer parts of the wheel. There is no metallic contact between the two parts of the wheel, and the cushioning elements always remain in contact with both rigid parts throughout the whole circumference of the two parts. An alternative construction is described and illustrated in which a similar effect is obtained, using only two pneumatic cushions.
