• The Minister of Transport has been urged by the National Guild of Transport Managers to introduce the compulsory installation of tachographs in heavy goods vehicles "at the earliest possible date".
The Guild asks him also to ensure that sufficient safeguards are incorporated in the regulations to protect the interests of transport managers in the event of failure, etc, of the instruments.
In making this recommendation to the Minister, the Guild says it considers it vital to the efficient and fair working of the hours and records regulations that vehicles should be fitted with tachographs.
"It is appreciated there are technical and financial difficulties which can, and will, be used as arguments against the compulsory fitting of these instruments," says the Guild. "At the same time, it is felt that the Minister should institute prompt and vigorous action to overcome such problems and lay the necessary regulations before Parliament. Only in this way will justice be 'seen to be done' to transport managers—and the drivers themselves.
