The National Secretary of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition (sponsored by CM) has written to the Minister of Transport as follows:—
You will have seen the suggestion made by Lord Chesham in a speech on behalf of the British Road Federation that he thinks it would be advantageous for you to obtain experience of conditions on the roads by riding as a 'mate' on a commercial vehicle.
"If you see any merit in this suggestion. may we offer the services of one of the 28 centre champions in our Competition who, from the evident skill and knowledge he has displayed in winning his championship, would be ideally suited to this task.
"May we convey our best wishes for your future in your new appointment and assure you of our continued efforts to foster safety on the roads and increased efficiency among those we consider to be the most important users of our roads—the commercial vehicle drivers."
