Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE first Rutland 7-8-boner to be fitted with one of the new Perkins R.6 oil engines is a long-wheelbase model forming part of an order for 12 Rutlands to be shipped to South America. The other 11 will be similar in general specification, but will be short-wheelbase tractor units.

Maximum output of the R.6 is 108 b.h.p. at 2,700 r.p.m. and Motor Traction, Ltd., Croydon, Surrey, have fitted a I4-in, heavy-duty clutch. The unit is fcur-point mounted in the chassis on Metalastik sandwich components at the front and conical-type units at the rear. A choice of two types of gearbox is given, the five-speed, constant-mesh, overdrive box providing ratios of 6.12, 3.23, 1.75 and 1 to 1 with 0.76 overdrive, and 4.62 to 1 revz.rse. The ratios of Ihe second box, which would be employed in conjunction with a two-speed axle, are 8.05, 4.36, 2.60, 1.59 and I to 1, with 6.07 reverse.

A Layrub-jointed two-piece shaft takes the drive to a heavy-duty hypoid axle which forms the standard equipment on Rutland Stuka models. An Eaton two-speed 16500 axle can be fitted to this model at extra cost. The Rutland Troubadour, a full 8-tonner, which is also supplied with the R.6 engine, has an extra-heavy-duty Eaton two-speed axle.

The Girling two-leading-shoe brakes on the Stuka are 16 in. in diameter with 3-in.-wide facings at the front, and 151 in, in diameter, with 5-in-wide facing, at the rear. Those on the Troubadour model arc: Front, l5 in. by 4( in.; rear, 151 in. by 5 in. In both cases Clayton Deaandre servo equipment is fitted.

A notable feature of Rutland models is the frame, which, in the case of the Stuka, is 71 in. deep with 3-in, flanges, the metal being 5/16 in. thick. On the Troubadour the respective dimensions are 10 in. by 3 in. by 11/32 in.

The Stuka inspected by The Commercial Motor had lief thand steering incorporating a Mantes 611 box. On the Troubadour •the standard specification includes the larger and more robust Mules 861 unit.

Now included in the Rutland range are the Albacore, Tucan and Minor 6 and 4. The choice of a Perkins P.6 or P.4 is given in the Minor. With the larger unit, this vehicle is rated as a 3-4-tonner and with the smaller engine as a 2-3-timner. In other respects the chassis are generally similar, save for the fitting of a sturdier front axle on the Albacore 6-tonner.

The Tucan, with Perkins P.6 engine, is rated as a 5-1onner and the Albacore with a similar unit as a 6-tonner. All these vehicles, which have been developed from the original Manton chassis, have a completely restyled front. Apart from the much-improved appearance, the whole assembly, including the wings, front panels and bumper skirting, is fabricated as a unit and resiliently mounted at four points.

The Stuka, with Perkins R.6 unit, was one of those demonstrated on Wednesday at the opening of the new Perkins works at Pderborough.
