The public control committee of the London County Council has prepared a report as to the work carried out during the year ended December 31st, 1922, in connection with the levying by the coun• cil of the duties on local taxation licences and licences on Carriages mad mechanicallypropelled vehicles under the Finance. Act, 1920, and Roads Act., 1920.

In regard to 1,069 offences-,under the Roads Act, .1920, of which 948 were reported by the police authorities, Summonses were issued in the rnajwity of cases, and the penalties imposed were credited to the,Roa4I'Fund in accordance with the provisions of the Roads Act.

In regard to the -work under the Roads Act, 1920, which came into opera' C22

tion on Japtiary 1st, 1921, and which is under the direction of the Minister of Transport, the meeilsts. in reTect of vehicle and dtivers' licences issued for 1922 showed an increase of 43,535 in the number of licences issued" and of £159,438 in the .amount received, the respective totals being 282,755 (veh;cles 166,329, drivers 116,426) and 21,715'.875 (vehicles £1,687,038-, drivers £28837).

rThe 'Minister of Transport has decided that the year in respect of receipts for Road Fund licence duties shall end on November 30th, owing to the fact that tho greater part of the receipts during the month of December relates to licences taken out for the following year.

The volume of work dealt with under the Roads Act is very considerable, and continues to expand. The advent of the low-priced private car, the fall in price of motor vehicles generally, and the growth of mechanical transport for business purposes, have each had the effect of increasing the duties devolving upon the comteil.

From May 3rd to June lit, 1923, legal proceedings, as follow, were taken :

Using unlicensed vehicles :-90 summonses, 88 convictions, penalties and costs, £311 16s.

Using vehicles for purposes other than those for which they were licensed :— Four summonses, four convictions, penalties and costs, £25 10s.
