THE WAY HAULIERS responded to the transport challenges of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics has been praised as contributing to the Games' success The fifthTravel in London report published by TfL, gives, for the first time, detailed analysis of the measures hauliers employed when delivering to the capital to avoid congestion and road closures linked to London 2012.

The report says: "Freight operators were ready for the Games and responded in a sophisticated way to the traffic challenges they presented. The plans they put in place helped minimise the impact of the Games on their operations, and also contributed to the smooth operation of the road network."

A survey of 1,000 hauliers found 58% made some form of change to their operations due to the Games, with medium-sized operators (running between 10 and 100 vehicles) most likely to do so (60%).

Stockpiling, delivery postponements and journey consolidation were all used by transport firms, with 5% of deliveries walked or cycled to their destination. The most popular measure was to deliver overnight, with twice as many operators (36%) undertaking out-of-hours deliveries.

The number of LGVs operating between midnight and 6am during the Olympics rose to 15.6% of total daily lorry traffic compared with 11% at other times Daytime peak period (10am-4pm) traffic fell from 42% to 38.7%.
