I felt I must write to tell you how much I enjoyed Ron Douglas's article on brakes (CM, January 20). And how right he is! I am sure we could both name juggernauts whose ability to stop is not matched by their ability to go — that is, of course, when the engines stay in one piece.

It is clearly evident that his long experience has given him a more than adequate grasp of the basic elements of wagons, but I wonder whether if, sometimes, he does not have some difficulty in keeping abreast of the ever-advancing technology. For instance, the intricacies of such developments as fresh air systems, electrically operated windows and two-tone horns come to mind. In the event that this is the case, and in an endeavour to be helpful, I will gladly arrange for one of the bright young gentlemen in our technical department to explain these matters in simple terms.

P. 0. IVES Deputy managing director DAF Trucks (GB) Ltd Marlow

When the time comes to talk about fresh air systems, two-tone horns and other bolt-on goodies, Ron Douglas will display his knowledge. In the meantime, his "'Driving for Profitseries will deal with the more practical and day-to-day problems of keeping vehicles earning money. — Ed.
