■ VER 2,000 lorry drivers in outh Wales are now on strike ver a pay claim their mployers say is a breech of he Government's pay code. The men, mostly members If the Transport and General Vorkers Union began strike ction at 6 am on Monday, allowing a decision taken at a lass meeting at Bridgend last ,aturday.

Long-term effects of a strike uch as this, says the Road laulage Association, will almost certainly send some hauliers to the wall.

George Wright, the union's officer for Wales and secretary of the Wales TUC, told CM: "The strike has been, and still is, 100 per cent successful.

"We are no longer in contact with the RHA and it is up to them to contact us."

Mr Wright also admitted to the union having a "register" of names of those hauliers who have agreed pay settle ments with their drivers.

Speaking earlier in the week, he said: "The strike started at 6 am and by 11.30 this morning 89 hauliers had telephoned to say they were willing to agree to our demands."

RHA industrial relations officer Chris Dixon told CM. "South Wales is at a standstill. The pocketing has a pretty destructive effect on industry, and we don't really know what the solution is."
