Six temperature-controlled double-deckers join NFT

FRESH FOOD LOGISTICS firm NFT has taken delivery of the first of six unique temperaturecontrolled double-deck trailers.

The Mantracon doubledecker, a bespoke chilled trailer for NFT, will operate out of the firm's Daventry depot, where it will distribute sandwiches for Marks & Spencer on behalf of food producer Uniq.

NFT says the trailer was developed over the past nine months as part of the company's Elm investment in its sustainability strategy.

All six units are expected to cut food delivery miles by 30%, and NFT claims that its bespoke double-deck trailer will also reduce annual mileage by 500,000 miles, which is equivalent to 631 tonnes of CO.,. David Frankish, CEO of NFT, tells CM "The introduction of the trailers will accelerate our low-carbon agenda and further streamline our supply chain, "Some companies have tested similar projects, but have not succeeded due to the investment and unique specifications needed."

Anthony Quinn, logistics manager at Uniq, adds: "Operationally, this [trailer] means we can increase capacity while ensuring the stacking trays remain at the same level as they would with single-deck trailers."

All six trailers are expected to be operational by the end of January 2010.
