This year the Government is spending £50 million on bridge strengthening, with another 253 million to follow over the next three years.

DTp officials estimate that a further £1 billion will be needed to strengthen road bridges owned by other organisations such as British Rail and local authorities. Plans are underway for a series of meetings between the Department of Transport and these organisations to determine who will foot the bill.

The Association of County Councils wants the DTp to back the programme with a grant.
