• Smiths Industries Ltd And PitneyBowes Ltd are to co-operate in the development of opportunities arising from the use of tachograph vehicle recorders.
Under an agreement announced on Wednesday Smiths Industries will undertake the manufacture and distribution of TZ.32 type tachograph recorders and associated "vehicle-fit" accessories previously handled by Pitney-Bowes which will concentrate on the development and manufacture of "off vehicle" accessories such as recording charts and chart reading devices. The TZ.32 range of tachographs was developed and manufactured by a division of the Zenith Watch Co, Switzerland, which was recently acquired by GITAC SA, a consortium of leading French instrument manufacturers. Agreements have been reached with GITAC which grant to Smiths Industries a continuing licence to manufacture and distribute in the UK and certain other countries, the TZ.32 tachograph and its variants, and also grants similar rights to the future range of tachograph products emerging from GITAC.
