rAA PLEA that the new regulations applying to dual-purpose and goods vehicles were not generally known, was made by a defendant in a speeding case heard by Arrington magistrates, last week. The defendant, Reginald Ernest Aubin, Southend-on-Sea, was fined El for exceeding 30 m.p.h. with a van at Arrington on June 25.

A police witness said that Aubin's speed, in a van with an unladen weight of It tons, had been checked at between 40 and 50 m.p.h. on a mile-long stretch of the old North Road, which included the built-up area of Arrington. The defendant had said that he did, not realize it was' a built-up area, and that he did not know he was limited to 30 m.p.h.

Aubin told the court'thathe had no intention of evading the law.

Another police witness commented: "He is-not the only driver who has not brought himself up to date with the present position."
