RATHER than seek to raise fares at present, Coventry •Transport Department is to introduce working economies to combat the £75,000 deficiency which it faces this year. Cllr. R. Eaves, chairman of the transport committee, said last week that at the end of the financial year the department's position would be such that it might break even or have a light deficit which could soon be eliminated.

On one route it was proposed to cut the frequency of the service from 12 to 10 buses an hour. It was estimated that no hardship would be caused to the travelling public and £30,000 would be saved in 12 months. Cllr. D. H. Whiteman considered that if drastic reductions had to be made to save /30,000. the measures that would have to be 'taken to save £75,000 would entail almost a stoppage of the service. He advocated an increase in fares.
