• Although Dover and Felixstowe fail to make the UK's top five ports in terms of tonnage handled, they are by far the busiest as far as hauliers are concerned.

Dover is Europe's busiest ro-ro freight port and handles around 1.6 million trucks and trailers a year, according to latest Department for Transport (Dff) statistics.

Felixstowe is by far the biggest container port, handling 1.9 million units annually, which is 43% of the overall UK market. Southampton has 16% of the market, handling around 7o cr,000 units.

The top five ports in terms of tonnage handled are Grimsby and Immingham, Tees and Hartlepool, London, Forth, and Suliom Voe.
