Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Despite the on-going problem of finding experienced HGV drivers, employment prospects in the road transport industry will rise during the next three months, according to the latest quarterly survey of employment prospects from Manpower.

The survey reports 16% of employers working in transport will be taking on staff in the period April-June 2003. This puts transport sixth in a league table of 21 employment sectors.

However, while prospects are improving slightly quarteron-quarter, they are still down year-on-year. Manpower also says there is growing evidence of a North/South employment divide with the North West now the best region for jobs, while the South-West and South-East are both below the national average. Scotland and Greater London are joint bottom of the prospects table.

Andrew Blakesley, divisional director of Manpower's driving and logistics division Driving Power, says the company "has seen a substantial rise in the number of national and local logistics firms turning to us to meet the ever-increasing need for qualified drivers".

"The driving industry faces a unique challenge in that there is a huge skills shortage in what is increasingly becoming a buoyant sector for employment opportunities."
