'THE last of the Great Western Rail'. way's 30 zonal schemes will be brought into operation on November 1, when Machynlleth, sub-depot of a new zone to be based on Aberystwyth, begins to function. The Aberystwyth zone will ultimately embrace 950 sq. miles and 36 stations, and, in addition to Machynlleth, there will be a second sub-depot at Lampeter.

On the same day Abergavenny will become a sub-depot of Newport, absorbing 12 stations. Six more stations are to be grouped under Pontypridd, and the four stations on the Yealmpton branch brought under Plymouth.

The first of the joint zonal schemes with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway will also come into operation on November 1, with the inclusion of 21 joint and L.M.S, stations in the Shrewsbury and Wrexham schemes.

Collection and delivery is by the company's road fleet centred on depots, instead of on individual stations.

BRITISH ENGINEERS WIN 24 PRIZES

BRITISH engineers have won 24 of the 467 awards in the " design-forprogress " competition sponsored by the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation, of Cleveland, Ohio. Prizes totalling $200,000 have been awarded for the best papers on arewelding design, research and application.

Among the successful British competitors are Mr. C. B. M. Dale, chief engineer and chief technical executive, Brush Electrical Engineering Co., Ltd., who wins $1,500. Others are Mr D. Dixon, of J. W. and T. Connolly, Ltd. ($100), Mr. C. H. J. Cooley, of G. A. Harvey and Co., Ltd. ($150), Mr. H. B. Fergttsson and Mr. E. F. Burford, also of G. A. Harvey and Co., Ltd. ($700), Mr. A. T. Heath and Mr. J. Stokes, of Ransomes and Rapier, Ltd. ($500), and Mr. W. M. Dunn, of Alvis Mechanization, lid. ($100).
