• Recent proposals announced by Junior Transport Minister Peter Bottomley will allow road humps to be sited closer to junctions, spaced more flexibly and used at zebra crossings. Following the disappointing take-up since they were introduced in 1983, the regulations governing the installation of humps are to be relaxed and their greater use encouraged.

Bottomley says that "Traffic speeds in built-up areas are often too high. Eighty per cent of all accidents occur here and pedestrians are particularly at risk.

Road humps — developed by the Department's Transport and Road Research Laboratory — are one way of slowing vehicles safely. The new regulations will allow the installation of TRRL-style humps on some public roads. These have a profile which gives a marked, but progressive slowing action, as used in car parks and on private roads."

• The Department of Transport has awarded a .5:14.25 million contract to Alfred McAlpine for roadworks in Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire. The work involves the construction of an 11.4km (7 miles) of single carriageway, 7.2km (4.5 miles) of side and slip roads and 11 bridges — including one over the M1 and over the River Don — to form a link road from the A616 through to the MI.
