Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• By measuring the rate at ..vhich lubricating oil passes via the pistons into the crankcase, the MotorTester by srp International of Sweden can give a rapid indication of engine wear.

The portable tester gives a reading in litres per minute when the engine is idling, indicating any degree of wear or whether there is damage to the pistons, piston rings or cylinders. Readings can be obtained in minutes and without the use of any tools.

The instrument can also measure any leakage from the coinbusion chamber into the cooling system through the cylinder head and can detect microscopic cracks or pores. It does this by monitoring the engine's combustion pressure while the engine is running at maximum torque.

The MotorTester has been developed through research into the condition of Mercedes-Benz turbocharged di( sel engines. Prototypes hay( been used in Swedish workshops for more than a year. Now SIT is to make three types of tester availab — for lorry engines and for petrol and diesel cars. The company is interested in selling, outside Sweden, manufacturing licences and concessions to use the measuring principles of the i strument for other applications.
