Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FIVE coach companies and the Railway Executive, meeting in Newcastle-on-Tyne last week, failed to reach agreement on the possibility of reducing fares for excursions and tours. The meeting was called by Galleys Motors, Ltd., Newcastle, owning 15 coaches

The company recently applied to the Northern Licensing Authority for permission to reduce fares, but he suggested that other operators should be consulted.

After the meeting, Mr. F. Cowey, general manager of Galleys Motors. Ltd., said that his company was the only one in favour of a reduction. The others thought that it was ludicrous to seek to lower fares after operators had fought for years to increase them.

Mr. Cowey contended that it was possible to run excursions and tours at

a mile. He claimed that the fare from Newcastle to Edinburgh could be cut from 18s. 9d. to 14s. 10d.' from Newcastle to York from 13s. 3d. to I Is. Id., and for the Lakes tout from 15s. 9d. to 12s. 10d.

In addition to the Railway Executive. United Automobile Services, Ltd.. Northern General Transport Co.. Ltd.. Venture Transport Co_ Ltd., and the Priory Motor Coach Co., Ltd., were represented at the meeting.

It is expected that Galleys Motors. Ltd., will repeat its application for permission to reduce fares. • US CONTINENTAL TOUR "IMPOSSIBLE"

COMPLATNTS about the lack of direct tcavel facilities from Dundee to the Continent were heard by the Scottish Licensing Authority, last week, when evidence was received in support of an application by Robert Dickson, Jnr., Ltd.. to run I6-day tours from Dundee to the South of France. The applicant estimated that the approximate cost per passenger would be £45.

Mr. Bernard Cotter, of Messrs. Cotter's Tours, said that his firm were running Continental tours from Glasgow. The charge for a I4-day tour to France and Switzerland was 55 guineas, and a 12-day tour to Paris and' Brussels £49 10s. He claimed that it was "absolutely impossible" for Mr. Dickson to run a I6-day tour for the suggested figure of about £45 and give satisfaction.

The applicant was granted permission to run the tours between June and September.
