Tit/TORE attention should be paid to J.VIrnaking the roads of this country more suitable for motor traffic, instead of concentrating on the imposition of additional restrictions on the owners of commercial vehicles, said Mr. A. E. Hewitt, of York, chairman of Northern Motor Utilities, Ltd., at the annual dinner of the company at York, last Saturday night.
Mr. Hewitt said that if there were any who thought that road haulage was a sort of spoilt darling, fattening on undue profits, because it was favoured at the expense of others forms of transport, their impression should be disillusioned.
Mr. Hewitt added that the company was making steady progress, and he thanked workers for their efforts during the year, especially the drivers, for whom he had the greatest admiration. The 348 vehicles run by the company had covered a total of 58,000,000 miles.
