• Management at P&O is trybig to head off industrial action from tanker drivers at an Essex depot following a ballot supporting industrial action.
The dispute, which involves P&O Roadtanks drivers working on a RP bitumen contract based at Stanford le Hope, is over working times and conditions. The Transport and General Workers Union says negotiations broke down over running, loading and discharge times and rest hours, although Danny Bryan, TGWU national secretary (road transport), says BP has already agreed to cut running times and loading times.
Only 11 staff were balloted, although the TGWU had threatened to ballot 120 drivers, fearing P&O could bring in others to take over the work.
Martin Taylor, managing director of P&O TransEuropean—t he division which includes Roadtankssays he is "hopeful the problem will be resolved".
