INVISIBLE RAY SPEED TEST PURELY EXPERIMENTAL.

ASUGGESTION by a Lancashire Member to the Home Secretary that he should recommend the adoption, in Lancashire of the invisible-ray method of testing speeds of motor vehicles, because this system was probL ably fairer than the ordinary methods of police trapping, did not find official approval.

DERESTRICTION AND " HALT " SIGNS.

THE Minister of Transport was asked by a Labour Member to issue instructions that there should be no derestrition signs on roads which did not accommodate at least three lines of

• traffic. Mr. Hore-Belisha replied that that was a matter which was governed by law.

He was also asked the number of

• prosecutions for non-observance of " Halt " signs since these were instituted, and whether he would Issue an order for the placing of 'Halt " signs on all branch roads leading to arterial roads. No official information is avail

able as to the number of prosecutions for this offence; but Mr. Hore-Belisha explained that the directions governing the placing of this sign provided for its erection at road junctions where the driver of_ a = vehicle, approaching ' major road, could not have a reason-' ably clear view, in both directions of the , major road before he entered IL SILENT ROAD DRILL EXPERIMENTS.

THE Ministry of Transport is interested in a number of experiments with road drills equipped with silencers, but as yet there is no development which would justify their use in public thoroughfares generally. Mr. Hore-Belisha informed Mr. W. Thorne, this week, that Westminster City Council arranged a test of a number of road drills on July 21 last, which was witnessed. by officers of his Department. Measurements of noise were made by the National Physical Laboratory. He understood that a report would be published in the near future.
