A DECISION as to which Channel Tunnel scheme should go ahead is expected by the end of the year, according to Junior Transport Minister Kenneth Clarke.

Addressing the Royal Institute of Public Administration in Nottingham on The Development of Transport Policy in the 1980s, Mr Clarke said that significant breakthroughs in British transport may be expected during this decade.

"Perhaps the 1980s will finally see a full-length Channel Tunnel. The Government has made it clear that any tunnel would need to be financed by private capital, but we are also prepared to offer whatsoever we can in other ways."

"We hope to reach a provisional decision by the end of this year as to which tunnel scheme might go ahead," said Mr Clarke.
