Specifying GM's 2.3-litre fourcylinder diesel engine in Bedford's CF250 increases its kerb weight over that of the petrol engined version by 75kg. With a gross weight of 2.57 tonnes, this still makes allowance for a healthy payload of 965kg. Diesel vans have a reputation for fuel economy. This one returned 10.6 lit/100km (26.66mpg) and was accompanied by good journey times.

An optional overdrive feature, added to Bedford's own fourspeed gearbox and operated by an electrical switch mounted on the top of the gear lever, proved to be invaluable, giving a fine choice of gear ratios for all occasions.

A redesigned front suspension does not increase the gross vehicle weight but has improved potential load distribution. Changes to rear springs have improved the ride and made the van quieter.

Bedford claims to have reduced interior noise levels by 30 per cent with improved insulation. We recorded 82dB(A) at 70mph which only dropped to 76dB(A) at 50mph. This is still too loud for comfort and sito-ils what would otherwise, with good steering, good lock and comfortable seat, be a good vehicle to drive.

The test van's side-entry door is designed to open fully, folding back onto the passenger door to supplement the rear door opening to a useful 3.6sqm (38.8sqft) of load area.
