ERF chose a non chargecooled version of Perkins's T6354.4 for its new M16 16-tonner.
The sacrifice of a little extra power and torque provided a body/payload capacity of more than 11.5 tonnes comparing well with the models produced by Ford and Dodge which dominate this market sector.
The Spicer T6.400 synchromesh gearbox gave light shift changes but sometimes the gate was not positive enough when fast down changes were needed.
For urban delivery the steering lock is adequate and manoeuvrability is satisfactory. Over CM's Welsh route, a fuel consumption of 25.251it/100km (11.9mpg), combined with an average speed of 58.96km/h (36.67mph), high-lighted the need for slightly more gears or different gearing, possibly in the form of a twospeed axle.
