With an air-cooled Deutz engine, Ford was able to claim that the 3220 gives the highest payload of any 32-tanner.

The payload as tested was 22.05 tonnes — very impressive with a box trailer and without the benefit of expensive lightweight options such as aluminium wheels and fuel tanks. However, the fist of extras that were included bumped the price up by £2,000.

The Deutz F6L 413FZ direct injection and normally aspirated vee six engine developing 150kW (201bhp) at 2,500rpm and 650Nm (479 lbft) at 1,500rpm proved sufficient to pull 60mph on the motorway.

Gear changing with the ZF six speed synchromesh gearbox with splitter was easy. Selection was positive and crisp.

The low-mounted cab rolled very little and the vehicle's handling had a taut feel, which was enhanced by the positive Cam Gears steering. In-cab temperature varied in relation to the work done by the air cooled engine so therefore constant adjustment of the heater controls was necessary.

Modest power did not detract from the Deutz's frugal fuel consum ption: it returned 38.281ft/100km (7.38mpg) but un. derstandably at a slower average speed than most.
