Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By G. S. Reikie, Manager. Service Department, David Brown Tractors Ltd.

STARTING troubles caused by wintry weather conditions can -very largely be overcome by adopting the correct procedure when stopping at the end of the day's work and, likewise, by following the correct " order of operations" when starting the engine from cold. These few hints are. simple to memorize and their udoption will save much valuable time—and bad temper—during the next few months, but tractor owners should bear in mind the fact that they do not lessen the need for the -following of all. reasonable safeguards against damage by frost; i.e., by suitable garaging, etc. Stopping for the Day:— (I) Turn " off " T.V.O. and " on " to petrol a few minutes before switching‘off the ignition,' in order to rid the fuel-pipe line, filters and carburetter 3f• paraffin.

(2) Make sure that radiator, cylinder block and watery pump are thoroughly drained. Keep a, few bricks or lengths of timber in position as packing to prvvicle the necessary inclini to ensure the drain cocks

• being at the lowest point and thus permit complete

• drainage.. Renaember that water:wash• type air

filters should also be drained. •

(3) Sediment is nearly always present in cooling water and may block the cocks. Use 'apiece...of Wire to clear them, and always make sure that the system is

empty before leaving. . .

(4) Fill fuel tanks at the end of each day. ExpoSed metal

inside the tanks is apt to collect moisture by condensation, and this water eventually reaches the carburetter.

(5) -Close radiator blind and cover engine completely with rug or blanket. Starting from Cold:—

(1) Cover radiator front and close all drain cocks.

(2) Have supply of hot water handy for filling radiator.

(3) -Check that the gear lever is in " neutral " position and give engine a fe'.v turns to distribute oil. Turn on petrol—if you have inadvertently stopped olgine on T.V.O., rid the fuel system completely before attempting to start.

Permit the float chamber of the carburetter to fill (where fuel pumps are fitted, pump with priming lever until the slight tesistance ceases).

With ignition switched off, open throttle a quarter of its travel, close air choke and pull up starting • handle smartly half a dozen times.

Switch on ignition and pull up starting handle until engine fires.

Opert choke until even running is obtained and regulate throttle until engine runs fairly fast.

Oil intssti.e „should be verified and radiator filled up as quiclib,' as possible. Then put the tractor to work immediately and switch over'to T.V.O. as soon as the engine is sufficiently hot.
