Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Are landfill sites smelly? Not if they are properly run, according to industry specialists. "They used to be stinking, fly-ridden and infested with vermin rats," says the CIWM's Chris Murphy. "But nowadays they should be covered at night, which both contains the gases and keeps the rats out."

The gas that collects under the covers is often sucked into pipes and burned off to generate electricity. So, in some cases it is rota question of landfill sites closing to be replaced by recycling plants; more that landfills are transforming themselves into recycling plants.
