Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

time it required typeapproved N2 and N3 LGVs to be equipped with class IV (wide-angle) and class V (close-proximity) mirrors.

In 2003 the European Union adopted the mirror directive (2003/97/EC), requiring all new trucks registered from January 2007 to have a revised large driver-side mirror and two new mirrors fitted one of which (a 'Cyclops mirror') will enable a driver to see straight down the front of his vehicle. • The proposed legislation is for the replacement of existing class IV and V mirrors in all LGVs built after 1998 with mirror glass that fulfils the increased fieldof-vision requirements of 2003/97/EC. The European Commission estimates the cost of the retrofit to be no more than €150 (E105) per truck.

Excluded from the measure would be trucks over 3.5 tonnes on which the mounting for the class V mirror is lower than 2.0 metres and vehicles without European type approval.

The EC consultation is now closed and a decision is expected shortly.
